  3. during the Middle Ages, the compensation paid
  4. by a murderer to the relatives of the victim,
  5. its value dependent on the social rank of the
  6. deceased. It originated in European tribal
  7. society as a substitute for the blood feud
  8. (essentially a form of vendetta), and was
  9. replaced by punishments imposed by courts of
  10. law during the 10th and 11th centuries.
